wireless nanny camera vs. DVR hidden camera

October 18, 2009

Owning a self defense and surveillance company, I always get asked a lot of questions about the products. So to help you guys out there, I want to cover the differences between wired, wireless and DVR hidden cameras also referred to as nanny cams.

A wired hidden camera has a wire from it that needs to connect to your recording device like a VCR, DVR or monitor. Sometimes this shouldn’t be a problem, depending on where the camera needs to be placed and how it looks, so that the wire does not look too suspicious. One good thing about wired nanny cams or hidden cameras is that they will not be interrupted by other devices like cell phones.

A wireless hidden camera is great because as the name says, there are no additional wires coming out of it, making it look more stealth. They normally come with a receiver, which is were the video signal is transmitted to. That receiver is then connected to the recording device. Most hidden cameras have a range of 1,000 feet, with high power ones being able to be up to 2,500 feet away from the receiver. You need to be careful though, since sometimes a cell phone may interrupt the video.

The most inclusive hidden camera or nanny cam is the DVR hidden camera. These devices record everything on an 8 GB SD card which goes right into the camera. You set it up on a screen, then when you are done you leave it to record as you set it. When you are ready to watch your recording, simply take out the 8 GB SD card and insert that into your computer. This is by far the simplest method, however these types of hidden cameras are more expensive.

If you are looking to buy a hidden camera, you can find board cameras from $30 all the way up to the DVR hidden cameras which may run $400- $600. Everything really depends on your budget and needs. Also, which model attracts you more.  There are nanny cams that look like alarm clocks, fans, thermostats, teddy bears, just all kinds of cool stuff. If you have questions about these devices, or want to see what some look like, visit my website at www.myselfdefensestore.com.
